| JUST ONE THING Ed Miliband needs to look at the latest science With climate breakdown happening around us, if you can do one thing this month, please ask your MP to 1. attend the parliamentary debate on the Seventh Carbon Budget and vote for a stronger budget, and 2. write to Secretary of State Ed Miliband calling for greater ambition. The Carbon Reckoning project has provided detailed evidence that the draft budget is too weak — relying on outdated science and falling short of the UK’s fair share of global action on emissions. Carbon Reckoning is working with the Quakers and MP Watch to call for greater action, and you can help by asking your MP to act before the debate. He offered a powerful analysis of how principles rooted in the innate dignity of every person can guide us in this time of challenging technological and social change. We will be joined by Fr Martin Poulsom to explore the ways in which the letter speaks to us in the context of the climate and nature crisis. Find out more, or go straight to Zoom registration CAMPAIGNS The People’s Emergency Briefing I’ve just heard some good news – by far the largest single group of local hosts for the People’s Emergency Briefing is Christian churches – currently at 188. So churches are stepping up. My church ran the film last week and above is a word cloud created from peoples’ initial reactions. Go here for all you need to know to run your own screenings And here are some new resources since the last enews: Suggested text asking your regional Synod to show the film For when you show the film, here are Canva 2-sided handouts, including the NEB text and the survey, but with suggestions for local information on the back. (You’ll need to go to ‘file’ and ‘make a copy’ and then you’ll be able to edit your copy.) WCC invites churches, communities to support call for responsible finance, climate justice The World Council of Churches (WCC) is inviting churches, ecumenical partners, and faith-based organizations worldwide to support an open letter backing an OECD complaint submitted by Methodist churches in Colombia, Great Britain, Ireland, and partners concerning HSBC’s financial relationship with Glencore and the Cerrejón coal mine in Colombia. Green Christian have signed this letter. Your church can too. Read more and sign the letter No More Profit From Harm Support the introduction of a Business, Human Rights and Environment Act. Transform Trade (formerly Traidcraft) are asking for at least one church in every UK constituency to publicly back this law – which is currently being considered in Parliament – by signing the Transform Trade declaration. Find out more and get involved Ask your MP to Stop Rosebank for good There’s a new EDM on Rosebank! The courts ruled the original drilling approval for the Rosebank oil field was unlawful because it failed to take account of the full climate impact of burning Rosebank’s reserves. Now the developers have reapplied. The Government must soon decide whether to approve or reject Rosebank. This is the defining test of its climate credibility. Ask your MP to sign the Early Day Motion Protecting the Coral Triangle On 9 June a global campaign was launched to protect the Coral Triangle from fossil fuel expansion. You can join in by telling senior insurance staff to stop insuring new fossil fuel projects in the region. The Coral Triangle is a vast stretch of ocean spanning six countries across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It is the world’s most biodiverse marine region, home to three-quarters of all known coral species, and it supports the livelihoods of more than 360 million people.
