The Listening Place
‘Listening Place’ at Gregg’s in Rayleigh High Street, was the brainchild of Revd Naomi Young-Rodas following attempts by the church to engage with people in the church building (for example Warm Space) which did not result in much attendance. We thought – if people won’t come to us, we’ll go to them. Naomi, or another volunteer simply sits in Gregg’s on a Wednesday morning (market day, so busy) for about an hour with a sign inviting people to chat if they want to. The project has been very warmly received by Gregg’s and other people, including RRAVS (Rayleigh Rochford and District Association for Voluntary Service) – comments include, ‘what a great idea’, ‘we need this’.
The project started in February with a pause for Gregg’s refurbishment in March, and a short summer break. To date not a huge number of people have availed themselves of the service, but those who have, have appreciated it. It has also proved a good place to have longer chats with church members who often happen to be there. And members from the Bridgwater Drive Church who venture to Rayleigh!
